The National Stock Exchange (NSE) in India has reduced the market lot size for Nifty Bank futures and options from 25 to 15, effective from July 2023 contracts, in an attempt to boost retail participation in the derivative segment. However, the lot size of Nifty50, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Midcap Select indices remain unchanged at 50, 40, and 75, respectively. The reduction in lot size is expected to improve liquidity in Nifty Bank options, although the impact on volatility is unlikely to be significant. Rival exchange BSE has also reduced the lot size of its banking index to 15 and shifted the expiry day for monthly, weekly, and long-dated futures and options contracts to Friday from Thursday. Additionally, the Indian government has hiked securities transaction tax (STT) by 25% each in both futures and options, which may make it tougher for new traders to make profits after paying all charges and brokerage costs.
